Seafields Story
Seafields was founded in 2021, but the idea began earlier. While exploring sustainable fuels for island nations, founder Sebastian Stephens came across a conversation between oceanographer Professor Victor Smetacek and Dr Franziska Elmer about Sargassum, an abundant, free-floating seaweed creating growing challenges for coastal communities, but with enormous untapped potential.
That conversation sparked an ambitious idea: could we learn to domesticate Sargassum and turn an unpredictable ocean resource into something useful at scale?
Sebastian brought together a multidisciplinary team spanning marine science, engineering, ocean ecology, climate finance and operations. Years of R&D followed, culminating in a key breakthrough: successfully keeping pelagic Sargassum alive and healthy within controlled marine systems.
That breakthrough shaped what Seafields is today. Rather than waiting for Sargassum to wash ashore and become waste, SeaClear intercepts coastal influxes before they beach, stabilises the biomass nearshore and turns it into reliable industrial feedstock.
It’s our first step towards a much bigger vision: building a new global source of sustainable biomass.
