Seafields Today: Our Approach to Responsible Sargassum Management

At Seafields, our mission is clear: help Caribbean communities manage harmful Sargassum blooms before they reach the shore and, in doing so, transform the biomass into valuable industrial feedstocks.

As our company has developed so too has our understanding of the challenge. Today we are focused on practical, nearshore Sargassum management that protects coastlines, supports local communities and builds a circular economy around a resource that has traditionally been treated as costly waste.

In light of the recent public discussion about our work, we would like to take the opportunity to clearly explain our approach, our commitments and the principles that guide everything we do.


The Problem

Caribbean communities are now consistently inundated with harmful Sargassum seaweed blooms that choke beaches, create environmental disasters, trap boats and marine life, impact the livelihoods of fisherfolk, and cause economic ruin for local companies in the tourism sector.

Sargassum is currently treated as costly waste: every year over $210m is spent in sending the seaweed to landfill, where it rots and emits greenhouse gasses, carbon dioxide and methane. The total economic impact for the region is estimated to be over $3 billion per annum, a figure which is devastating for an area predominantly made up of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) that are already highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

We Believe Harmful Sargassum Should Become a Resource, Not a Waste Stream

Today, Sargassum is mainly collected directly from beaches with heavy machinery that causes significant coastal erosion. By the point of collection, the Sargassum has typically decomposed, meaning that almost all of the seaweed is put into landfill instead of being turned into valuable products. It makes no sense to allow this valuable biomass to decompose or be discarded into landfill. That is why Seafields is building a circular, zero-waste model that unlocks the value within the biomass through transforming it into industrial feedstocks. This creates local jobs, develops skills and generates new economic opportunities.

Why Are We Writing This Letter?

We are the first company to successfully domesticate pelagic Sargassum. We are also providing part of the solution to the Caribbean Sargassum crisis. That is why we have a responsibility to clearly communicate the opportunities and the challenges surrounding responsible Sargassum management.

How Seafields Has Evolved

Like many start-ups and innovative companies, our evolution has been shaped by research, field experience and constructive engagement with scientists, governments, environmental organisations and many other stakeholders. We believe responsible innovation means listening, learning and adapting as new scientific evidence emerges.

Our early work explored the role that pelagic Sargassum could play in large-scale carbon dioxide removal. As our research progressed and our understanding of the challenge evolved, so did our business.

Field trials and continued research demonstrated that sinking Sargassum to the deep ocean floor could have potentially negative impacts and, fundamentally, would waste a potentially valuable resource. We also discovered that the otherwise harmful pelagic Sargassum could instead be kept fresh and stored in nearshore paddock systems, unlocking its potential to become a feedstock in many more industries and resolving the biggest issue facing the nascent Sargassum valorisation industry: reliability of supply. This opened up a practical opportunity to address one of the Caribbean's most immediate environmental challenges, whilst also creating a valuable industrial feedstock.

As such, today Seafields is a nearshore Sargassum management and circular feedstock company.

Our commercial model has evolved alongside that transition. Rather than relying on uncertain future carbon credit markets, our focus is now on delivering Sargassum management services and supplying responsibly managed biomass to industry for products including biostimulants, biochar and biomaterials. This model still delivers significant climate impact without any potential negative side effects that could arise from biomass sinking.

Seafields does not operate large-scale open-ocean farms. Our commercial model is not based on sinking Sargassum nor using the ocean floor for carbon storage.

Our Progress So Far

Our approach to responsible Sargassum management is built on years of research, engineering and field validation. To date, Seafields has:

  • Become the first company to successfully domesticate pelagic Sargassum, demonstrating that this free-floating seaweed can be stabilised and managed in controlled marine conditions

  • Developed the integrated SeaClear™ system and proprietary AlgaePonix™ paddocks, enabling nearshore interception, stabilisation and management of harmful Sargassum blooms

  • Validated our technology through real-world deployments, refining our systems through continuous monitoring and operational experience

  • Established partnerships with Caribbean governments, research institutions and commercial organisations to support responsible Sargassum management and the development of a circular bioeconomy

  • Integrated environmental monitoring into every test farm deployment, using underwater cameras and environmental sensors to monitor biodiversity, water quality and system performance

  • Secured commercial partnerships and offtake agreements with leading organisations in the biochar, biomaterials and biostimulant sectors, demonstrating substantial market demand for responsibly managed Sargassum-derived feedstocks

What Seafields Is, and Is Not

To avoid confusion, we would like to clarify what our work today involves:

  • We operate anchored systems in the nearshore environment, not in the open ocean

  • We intercept harmful Sargassum blooms at sea, before they beach

  • We work alongside governments, fisherfolk and coastal communities. We preserve biomass for productive use, not disposal or sinking

  • We are building a circular economy around previously harmful Sargassum seaweed

At Seafields, we welcome robust debate about how harmful Sargassum blooms should be managed. These blooms present one of the Caribbean's most significant and growing environmental, economic and social challenges. Clearly, there is no single one-size-fits-all solution.

However, public discussion should be grounded in accurate information. Recent claims about our work contain inaccuracies that risk creating confusion about our technology, our approach and our commitment to responsible environmental stewardship.

We believe it is important to explain what we do, what we do not do, and the principles that guide our work.

What Seafields Does Do

Harmful Sargassum blooms arrive on Caribbean coastlines every year, creating significant environmental, economic and social impacts. Once the seaweed reaches the beach it begins to decompose rapidly, producing foul-smelling hydrogen sulphide gas, releasing greenhouse gasses including methane, affecting marine habitats and tourism, and creating a costly disposal challenge for local authorities.

Seafields works upstream of that problem.

Using our integrated management system, we intercept harmful blooms at sea nearshore, before they beach. The biomass is then transferred, stored and stabilised (all at sea) using our proprietary paddocks, preserving its quality before it is harvested and processed into industrial feedstocks for products including biostimulants, biochar and biomaterials.

By treating harmful Sargassum as a resource rather than waste, we are building a circular economy that benefits coastal communities while reducing reliance on fossil-derived synthetic materials.

Working With Communities, Not Around Them

The people most affected by harmful Sargassum blooms are the people who understand them the best.

Every Seafields deployment begins with engagement. Before any prototype or commercial deployment enters the water, we undertake extensive stakeholder engagement, meeting with governments, environmental agencies, fishers, tourism operators, local businesses and community representatives to understand local priorities and concerns.

Our goal is not simply to remove Sargassum. It is to leave communities with stronger local capacity, new economic opportunities and more resilient coastal management.

That means:

  • Finding local entrepreneurs to set up regional Seafields companies

  • Employing and training local teams

  • Working alongside fishers

  • Supporting local supply chains

  • Creating new opportunities around Sargassum processing and utilisation

Our aim is to ensure that communities benefit directly from the circular economy that we are building. The Seafields model is to develop processes, technology, scientific rigour and training, and then license these to local teams and entrepreneurs, so that they can benefit from the economic upside of this new Sargassum-based circular economy.

We recognise that successful Sargassum management depends on trust. That is why each consultation is not a box-ticking exercise, it is a core part of our deployment process. We listen first, adapt where needed and work to ensure our projects reflect local priorities, alongside the scientific evidence.

Environmental Stewardship

Environmental stewardship is embedded throughout every deployment, from site selection to ongoing monitoring. Before any deployment takes place, we conduct multiple site visits and environmental assessments to understand local conditions, identify potential sensitivities and inform the project design. Once deployed, our paddocks are equipped with underwater cameras and environmental sensors that allow us to monitor biodiversity, water quality and system performance over time. Our environmental monitoring programme is informed by independent scientific expertise and continues to evolve as new data becomes available.

We continue to work together with independent scientists, universities and government agencies to evaluate environmental outcomes and improve our systems.

Independent Science and Transparency

Our work has been developed alongside marine scientists, engineers, research institutions and government partners. We actively welcome peer review, independent monitoring and constructive scientific dialogue; better evidence leads to better Sargassum management for everyone.

Moving Forward

Harmful Sargassum blooms are not a future challenge, they are affecting Caribbean communities today. Addressing them will require collaboration between governments, scientists, local communities and responsible industry.
